Walter 'Wally' Lewandowski, age 89, of Foley, died Wednesday June 15, 2011 at his home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 20, 2011 at SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Gilman, MN. The Rev. Dan Walz will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Military honors will be performed by the Gilman VFW and the Foley American Legion.
Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Foley Funeral Home in Foley, MN and 9 to 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home1 hour before services at church. The Fr. Pierz Assembly 4th Degree Knights of Columbus will stand Honor Guard from 5 to 8 p.m. and the Gilman Knights of Columbus Immaculate Mary Council 9261 will pray the rosary at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Arrangements were made by the Foley Funeral Home, Foley, MN.
Walter Lewandowski was born October 26, 1921 in Gilman, Minnesota to Ben and Magdalene (Plocharz) Lewandowski. He married Darlene Adams on September 22, 1947 at SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Gilman. He lived and farmed in the Gilman area all his life. He was a WW II Army Veteran, known as Warren while in the Army, serving as a tank commander with the 772nd Tank Destroyers in the Battle of the Bulge. He was a member of the Foley American Legion Post 298; the Gilman VFW Post 1558; Knights of Columbus 3rd degree since 1962 and a Fr. Pierz Assembly 4th Degree since 1979; 4th degree Honor Guard; was a Grand Knight of Immaculate Mary Council 9261 and District Deputy of District 22. He was inducted into the 4th degree hall of fame. Walter was township supervisor for 6 years; County Commissioner for 20 years; director of Benton County Co-op Telephone Co. for 44 years. He was a member of SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Gilman.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Darlene, Foley, MN; sons and daughters, William 'Bill', San Francisco, CA; Joseph (Bobbi), Columbia Heights, MN; Barb (Tony) Ruprecht, St. Cloud, MN; Tim, Sauk Rapids, MN; Carol (Jeff) Miller, Foley, MN; Debbie Kaproth (Kurt), St. Cloud, MN; Donnie (Cindy), Sartell, MN; Daniel (Jan), Ft. Dodge, Iowa; Michael (Tammy), Sauk Rapids;, MN 22 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; sisters, Wanda Anderson, New Brighton, MN; and Rita Daszkiewicz, Rogers, MN; brothers, Ervin (Carol), Coon Rapids, MN; and Ernest (Arlene), Foley, MN.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Sylvester, sisters, Irene Pokladnik, Clara and infant sister, Selma, brother-in-laws, Bill Pokladnik, Earl Anderson and Joe Daszkiewicz.
