Herbert Schefers, age 92, of Foley, MN, died Monday September 13, 2010 at the Foley Nursing Center, Foley, MN.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 17, 2010 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Morrill, MN. The Rev. Dan Walz will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery with Military Honors presented by the Hillman American Legion.
Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Foley Funeral Home in Foley, MN and 1 hour before services at church. Parish prayers will be 5 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Arrangements were made by the Foley Funeral Home, MN.
Herbert Schefers was born August 3, 1918 in Richmond, Minnesota to John and Anne (Schlangen) Schefers. After the Armistice Day snow storm of 1940, he hitchhiked to Long Beach, California to work as a welder in the Kaiser Ship Yards. After the attack of Pearl Harbor he enlisted in the US Navy and was stationed in Hawaii, where he was commissioned as a welder at the Pearl Harbor Naval Base. Following his discharge, he moved back to St. Joseph, MN. He married Isabel Backes on September 5, 1949 at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Farming, MN. The couple owned a grocery store in St. Cloud, MN before buying a farm north of Ramey, MN where they raised 8 children, retiring in 1989. He moved to the Foley Nursing Center, Foley, MN in 2007. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and telling stories. Herbert was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Morrill, MN and was a member of the Hillman American Legion Post #602.
He is survived by his wife, Isabel, Foley, MN; sons and daughters, Terry (Dana), Ham Lake, MN; Linda Young (David Hoffmann), Hillman, MN; Diane (John) Struffert, Hillman, MN; Tom (Krissy), Foley, MN; John (Darla), Richmond, MN; Jim (Bonnie), Foley, MN; MaryAnn Schefers, Pine City, MN; Rick (Charlotte Moeller), Foley, MN; brothers and sisters, Clara Stueve, St. Joseph, MN; Irene Pratt, Long Beach, CA; Corbin (Lori) Van Nuys, CA; Anselm (Florentine), St. Cloud, MN; Oswald 'Chub', Anchorage, AK; 15 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters, Ervin, Norbert, Al, Alma Buerman and Viola Wiesner and son-in-law, Kenny Young.
