Alma Herbst, age 93, of rural Foley, died Friday October 14, 2011 at her home, surrounded by her family, after a 3 month battle with cancer.
Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 17, 2011 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Duelm, MN. The Rev. Virgil Helmin will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Foley Funeral Home in Foley and 1 hour before services at church. Parish prayers will be 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Arrangements were made by the Foley Funeral Home, Foley, MN.
Alma Herbst was born January 5, 1918 in Glendorado Twp.,Benton Co.,MN to John L. and Della (Gilyard) Henry. She graduated from Foley High School in 1936 and from the St. Cloud Business College in 1938. She married Edmund M. Herbst August 27, 1946 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Duelm. The couple had lived and farmed in the Duelm area all their lives. She worked at the Sauk Rapids Hardware Store from 1938-1946 and again from 1966-1990. She also worked at Happy Sleeper in St. Cloud, MN as a sales associate, from 1998 until May of 2011. She was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church, where she was a member of the Christian Mothers and had been the parish bookkeeper for 20 years. She was also a member of the Bible Study Fellowship in St. Cloud. Alma's great joy was spending time with her family and serving everybody delicious home cooking. She also enjoyed drinking coffee, gardening, bowling, playing 500 and traveling, especially to Grand Marais, MN.
She is survived by her sons and daughters, Judy (Bernie) Winkelman, Foley, MN; Alan (Sandra), Sartell, MN; Kathy (John) Rahm, Foley, MN; Harold (Anna Marie), Litchfield, MN; Don (Barb), Foley, MN; JoAnn (Kevin) Winkelman, Foley, MN; 22 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren; sisters, Doris Neumann, Grove Lake, MN; Helen Hyttsten, Becker, MN; brother, Alvin (Connie) Henry, Foley, MN and sister-in-law, Nellie Henry, Sartell, MN.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edmund, April 30, 1998, brothers, Vernon and Donald Henry, 2 grandchildren, Michael Herbst, April 17, 1984 and Cecelia Herbst, April 30, 1979.
The family would like to thank everyone for all their support. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Poor Clares Monastery, Sauk Rapids, MN.
