Dorothy Kaproth Hendricks (“Kappy”) of Bethesda, MD passed away peacefully on November 15, 2016 at the age of 81. She is survived by her loving son, Jeffrey Sherwin Hendricks of Bethesda, MD, loving daughter, Lisle Hendricks Davies, son-in-law, Blake Davies, and grandchildren, Katrina Noelle Davies and Christopher Julian Cameron Davies of New York City. She is also survived by her beloved brother and sister-in-law, John and Phyllis Kaproth, of Foley, MN, and many nieces and nephews.
Kappy attended The College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, MN, before transferring to and graduating from University of Colorado, Boulder, where she met her husband, Marshall L Hendricks. Kappy lived in Tokyo, Japan from 1965 to 1970, where she helped to found the European Graphic Art market. She also worked in the U.S. intelligence community. Upon returning to Washington, DC in 1970, she founded The Hendricks Art Collection. In 1973, Kappy earned a Master’s Degree in Japanese Linguistics from Georgetown University. Kappy was the world’s foremost authority on Contemporary Japanese prints, authoring two books, which included the biography and Catalogue Raisonne of Japan’s leading print maker, Tadashi Nakayama. She authored numerous articles, was sought out as an expert speaker and was the country’s leading Japanese print appraiser. In the 1970’s, Kappy was a docent at the National Gallery of Art, where she gave tours entirely in Japanese to visiting officials. In the 1980’s, she brokered the sale of very important French Impressionist paintings, including several Monets. She was active in the art world up until the time of her death.
Kappy loved to travel and developed a particular fondness for Paris, studying to become fluent in French. She visited the city 80 times. One of the highlights of her life was visiting Syria before the war, with her long-time companion, Andre Jabli, where she visited numerous religious shrines. She enjoyed many other trips overseas with her daughter, son-in-law and grand-children, as well as memorable road trips in the U.S. with her son, Jeffrey.
Kappy will be laid to rest at the St. Lawrence Parish Cemetery at Duelm, MN, alongside her loving parents and family.
